Blue Jackets vs Wild Prediction and Picks for October 10 2024 (2024)

The Columbus Blue Jackets face the Minnesota Wild with both teams looking to rebound from rough seasons. The Blue Jackets were the worst team in the Eastern Conference and had a disastrous offseason. The Wild missed the playoffs last season but considering they made the playoffs the three seasons before that, they enter this season expected to bounce back. Both teams are looking to start the season strong and this game looks to be a good one.

Blue Jackets hope to step up on both ends of the ice

The Blue Jackets had without question the worst offseason in the NHL both on and off the ice with star skater Johnny Gaudreau's tragic passing in the late summer and the team will have to power through the season without him. The offense scored only 2.85 goals per game last season and without Gaudreau or Patrik Laine, who was traded, they'll have to rely on Adam Fantilli and Kirill Marchenko, two young skaters who combined for 35 goals and 34 assists last season.

The offense looks to be a mess but the defense also looks to struggle after allowing 3.63 goals per game last season. Zach Werenski and Ivan Provorov will lead the top pair but the rest of the unit is sure to struggle and allow opponents to fire shots on the net at will. Moreover, goaltender Elvis Merzlikins played poorly in the net and hopes to rebound as the starter.

Minnesota hopes offense gets them back to the playoffs

The Wild missed the playoff last season but hope their offense gets them back as it averaged 3.02 goals per game and returns a lot of elite talent. Kirill Kaprizov scored 46 goals and 50 assists while Mats Zuccarello, Matt Boldy, and Joel Eriksson Ek added 71 goals and 125 assists to give the team two great forward lines. On top of that, Brock Faber was a force from the point, scoring eight goals and 39 assists to open up the offense.

The offense looks to once again be great but the defense looks to rebound after allowing 3.17 goals per game last season. Brock Faber and Jonas Brodin led the top pair but the rest of the unit struggled, allowing the opposition to carry the puck into the offensive zone and easily find open shots on the net. The hope is that Filip Gustavsson rebounds from a rough season in the net and returns to being the dominant starting goaltender that he was in 2022-23.

Best Bets for Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Minnesota Wild

Rating:

The Wild are looking to prove that last season was an oddity and take over this game on both ends of the ice. The Wild should pile on the goals with Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone and creating open shots with quick passes. The Wild should limit a Blue Jackets offense that averaged only 2.85 goals per game with Brock Faber and Jonas Brodin creating turnovers in all three zones and limiting shots on the net while goaltender Filip Gustavsson blanks the shots on the net. The Wild should win the game and cover the spread in a dominant win on their home ice.

Prediction: Wild -1.5 (+110)

Rating:

Both teams have questionable defenses and this game looks to be a high-scoring one from the first period. The Blue Jackets should create plenty of scoring chances against the Wild, who allowed 3.17 goals per game last season, with Adam Fantilli, Kirill Marchenko, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone and creating open shots with quick passes. The Wild, who averaged 3.02 goals per game last season, should run up the score against the Blue Jackets, who allowed 3.63 goals per game, with Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, Mats Zuccarello, and the rest of the forward unit crashing the net on the rush and creating open shots with effective puck movement while Brock Faber picks apart the Blue Jackets from the point. The Over should cover in a high-scoring game with both offenses stepping up.

Take the Over on 6.5 goals.

Prediction: Over 6.5
